Gammi and Pop's July Visit

What a nice surprise - Gammi and Poppi came in for an unexpected visit!  No one was more excited about this than Kaden.  Ever since our trip back to Lexington in the Spring, Kaden has incessantly asked when he would get to see his beloved Gam and Pop again.  We thought that it would have to wait until Ocean City, but were pleasantly surprised by an earlier meeting.

The first day, Kaden asked if they could take a bus ride to the aquarium.  He had so much fun that he snuggled up to Pop and slept though the bus ride home.

Pop is Kaden's favorite playmate.  The silliness that goes on between the two of them keeps everyone in giggles.  Recently, Kaden is big into "fixing" things.  He has numerous tool sets, but likes his Daddy's tools best of all.

He is also obsessed with water play - especially the hose.  I only wish we had a yard big enough for a sprinkler.  If we did, I know he would be outside everyday running around like a wild child.

We have a lovely orange tree in our back yard and Kaden loves the tasty summer treat.  We had picked most all of them by the time Gammi and Pop arrived, but thanks to Pop's ingenuity and a couple of golf clubs Kaden got to squeeze out one last batch of orange juice.

Our big night out was to a local restaurant, The Corvette Diner.  Or, as Kaden calls it, The Chicken Restaurant.  He calls it this because the last time we were there all the servers danced around to the Chicken Dance song.  This super fun restaurant has themed dining rooms, decor right out of a 50's diner, and costumed servers that are as high energy as they come.  The DJ plays great oldies music and gets the kids involved in the fun by encouraging dancing, singing, and general silliness.  They even have a balloon artist that will make you whatever you want...he created for Kaden exactly what he requested, a crazy hat!

We all indulged in Gammi's excellent home cooking and enjoyed several picnics on the porch.

Kaden was proud to show off his art skills to his Gammi and Pop - clay, paint, and (especially) smelly markers, he enjoys all mediums.

Ahhh...still loving garbage trucks.  I must say that we have the best garbage men in San Diego.  They know that, every Monday, Kaden will be waiting and waving.  And every Monday, they honk their horn, give a wave, and bring a giant smile to my little man's face.

In terms of favorite trucks, construction trucks are a close second.  With all the road construction going on in La Jolla, Kaden can choose a different curb every day and find hours of free entertainment.

Kaden and Pop not being incredibly helpful while we vacuumed the house, though I'd forgive those those smiles pretty much anything.

Our Sunday stroll from church to the Farmer's Market.

In preparation of the big Fourth of July party, Kaden helped Pop sweep off the back porch.

He wasn't as helpful when it came to washing off the front porch with Gammi.

Kaden's first introduction to the ice cream truck.  Not at all surprised that this introduction was made by Pop!

Uncle Brian and The Midway

Uncle Brian has such a busy social calendar, but he still squeezed in a visit with Kaden.  On his way to a wedding in Sonoma, he made a 24 hour pit-stop in San Diego!  Of course, we packed those hours with as much fun as we could.  The highlight of the visit, other than spending some quality time with Uncle Brian, was a trip to The Midway Aircraft Carrier.

Father's Day 2012

Happy Father's Day to the best Dad a kid could ask for - playmate, tickle monster, teller of funny stories, master of silliness, and man whose heart is filled to the brim with love for his son.

On Father's Day, I got the boys up early...well, Kaden is always up with the birds nowadays, so really I just didn't let Kevin sleep in.  We had a quick snack and jumped in the car.  Kaden had a day of adventure planned for Dad.

First stop:  The Ferry to Coronado

Second stop:  A Bike Ride Around the Island

Third stop:  Brunch at The Hotel Del Coronado and a Walk Along the Beach

Whew, that was a big adventure for this little man.

Mr. Independent

Kaden recently figured out how to get things out of his reach.  This involves a lot of chair dragging, but I have to say that it is effective.

The Writing Is On The Wall...Literally

While I was at the grocery store picking up some breakfast goodies, Kaden decided he would start an art project.  Unfortunately, the canvas for Kaden's most recent masterpiece was our wall.  Thank goodness for Magic Erasers!  Where was Dad, you ask...mmhmm, I wondered the same thing.  In the end, neither got scolded too badly - the masterpiece was erased without too much trouble and lessons were learned.

A Visit From Uncle Sean and "Ju-Wee"

Recently Uncle Sean and Julie came to San Diego for a visit.

The obligatory forced smile seems to be something he inherited from his uncle.

Kaden wanted to be just like his Uncle Sean.
Here, Kaden closely monitors his uncle and then copies his actions.  Could be worse role models, for sure!
And, to be clear, that is not a cocktail, Kaden just really liked the stirring straws or "teeny-tiny staws" as Kaden called them.

The trip included a day at Sea World.  We may have set a new world record for the amount of things seen at Sea World in the shortest amount of time.  The real record was that we only went on one ride in the Sesame Street Bay of Play!  Some days, Kaden would prefer spending all of his time there.

Kaden, Julie, and Uncle Sean saying "Hi" to Shamu and feeding the dolphins some ice.

The Shark Tank

The penguin exhibit can be a bit stinky...so thoughtful little Kaden helped Uncle Sean.  He said that I should hold Julie's nose, but Julie decided that she could handle it on her own.

Getting ready for the Shamu show - which Kaden did not sit through.  And, of course, Abby's Spinning Stars.  Uncle Sean had us spinning so fast that all of the adults were discombobulated the rest of the day!  Kaden, however, LOVED every second of being pinned to the rim of the cup.

Their last night we went to what has quickly become our favorite spot for fish tacos - The P.B. Fish Shop.  Kaden likes to survey the fresh options before choosing what to eat; and then always chooses the Fish and Chips.  He also likes the "Giant Marlin" that hangs outside.
